SOUTHWOOD MIDDLE SCHOOL DANCE AUDITION INFORMATION |

The dance audition is performance-based. It is important to note the audition requirements and to make sure applicants are dressed appropriately for the audition. The dance program provides exposure to intensive instruction in ballet, modern, and jazz with occasional classes in tap, flamenco, and Afro-Caribbean. Emphasis is placed on technique, choreography, composition, improvisation, dance history, and development of original movement. Students participate in special performances, field trips, and master classes.
Audition Requirements and Audition Process will consist of:
1. Students must demonstrate ability to perform a series of movements that
will be taught during the audition. The students will be evaluated in the
following skills:
Skill Achievement and Potential:
• Range of motion at
the hip joint (rotation, extension and flexion)
• Coordination
• Amount of
natural range of motion at ankle and knee
• Strength and endurance
•
Overall body flexibility, especially of the vertebral column
• Memory
(ability to repeat a sequence of steps)
High Energy Level:
• Turns in
place and across the floor
• Leaps across the floor
Natural
Expressiveness:
• Presentation of self
• Musicality
2. The student will prepare a one minute solo dance (any style) to perform at the audition; or, the student will improvise a dance to a style of music they select from the adjudicator.
When performing the dance solo do not lip-synch the music which accompanies you.
Recommended attire for audition:
• Boys – short pants, jazz pants, or
biker shorts; T-shirt; dance shoes or bare feet
• Girls – Leotard or tights
and/or T-shirt and biker shorts or stretch pants; hair pulled back from face;
dance shoes or bare feet.
