SOUTHWOOD MIDDLE SCHOOL
THEATER AUDITION INFORMATION

The theater program is designed to develop fundamental skills in the student actor through physical and vocal training, improvisations, the study of plays and their construction, musical theater, play production, theatrical choreography, “technical theater” (costuming, set design, props, lighting, sound) and play writing. In addition to classroom experiences, students attend drama festivals, state conferences, workshops, special performances and outstanding theatrical productions.

The Theater audition will consist of:

1. Performing a self-introduced, memorized monologue ( 2-3 minutes in length).

2. Participating in individualized or group improvisations.

3. Holding an interview to help determine the student’s level of discipline, interest and suitability for the program.

4. Displaying the ability to sight-read aloud (this will be demonstrated during the audition).

As the monologue is being prepared, it is important to note that this should not be a scene for 2 people or a poem. It may be a monologue from a play or from a book of monologues. It is recommended that the monologue be age appropriate. Monologue books can be obtained from the library, book stores or your school drama teacher, if applicable.
