SOUTHWOOD MIDDLE SCHOOL
VISUAL ART AUDITION INFORMATION

The Visual Art program includes exposure to art history, contemporary trends and instruction in quality art education. Studio emphasis is placed on drawing, composition, printmaking, painting, commercial arts, fibers, sculpture and ceramics with a constant concern for aesthetics and art appreciation.

The Visual Art Audition will consist of:

1. Evaluating samples of ORIGINAL artwork accomplished by the student, either at home or in school.

2. Administering a three-pronged “observation, imagination and visual memory” drawing test.

3. Holding an interview and an optional dimensional test to help determine the student’s level of discipline, interest and suitability for the program.

4. All students should bring a portfolio to the audition consisting of FIVE TO TEN BEST EXAMPLES of their artwork, representing as many different mediums as possible.

In compiling your portfolio, you should carefully prepare and select five to ten original works of art which show your ability and interest. Do not include “copy work” or “cartoon” figures. The portfolio should include works made from observation, imagination and experimentation, with some works in black and white and some in color. If you have a sketchbook, you should bring it to the audition.
